Tower Hamlets LALY hat trick

Three local Tower Hamlets lawyers made history when they won three out of ten awards in the prestigious nationwide search for the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year.  Kathy Meade from Tower Hamlets Law Centre won the title for Social Welfare Law, Sophy Miles from Miles & Partners took the title for Mental Health Law and David Jockelson, also from Miles & Partners made it a hat trick for Tower Hamlets with the award for Family Law.

Both organisations are active members of Tower Hamlets Community Advice Network (THCAN) which aims to improve and increase advice provision across the borough.

“Altogether there are ten awards being competed for across the whole country, so winning three in Tower Hamlets is quite an achievement” said Heather Johnson who manages the THCAN project.

“It also demonstrates the commitment of THCAN members locally to help the most vulnerable and deprived people in the community obtain legal redress for their problems” she added.

Other LALY winners were:
Criminal defence lawyer:  Peter Mahy,  Howells, Sheffield
Young legal aid solicitor:  Katherine Craig, Christian Khan, London
Young legal aid barrister:  Adam Straw, Tooks Chambers
Family legal aid lawyer:  David Jockelson,  Miles & Partners, London
Social and welfare lawyer:  Kathy Meade, Tower Hamlets Law Centre
Mental health lawyer:  Sophy Miles, Miles & Partners, London
Immigration lawyer of the year:  Amie Henshall, Parker Rhodes Hickmotts, Rotherham

Outstanding Achievement

In addition to these awards, the judging panel presented an award for Outstanding Achievement to the leading legal aid barrister, Michael Mansfield QC, honouring him for a career at the Bar spanning 40 years.  The judges praised him for ‘never shying away from controversial causes or apparently unwinnable cases’ commenting that “whatever the case and whoever the client, he has brought the same degree of fearlessness and energy to his advocacy”.
